community interview
Rev. Larry Hill
Rev. Larry Hill of Word of God Ministries located in Northwest Atlanta, is one of my community representatives. He has been in the community for over three decades giving back to his neighborhood. He has two children Krista and Jason Hill one of which is a high school dropout, that went on to receive his GED and graduated from Tuskegee University. He views the problem today as the environment children are growing up in as begun to influence the importance of education. Rev. Hill raised his children in a low income environment, while working two jobs to provide the mere necessities for his family. In his community there were several males his son age that sold illegal drugs. Rev. Hill left for work before his children school bus came; we allowed Jason the opportunity to begin skipping school because no one was at home. He eventually dropped in the eleventh grade, he began to see the guys his age with pockets full of money and name brand clothes and he allowed them to become his role models.
Rev. Hill fought to get Jason back in regular school but he had exceeding absentees that would not allow him to re-enroll. Therefore, he moved Jason out the community and enrolled him to get his GED, and gave him no choice of whether he would go to college. Now, he is a college graduate and has a career in community support services. All the letters the school sent home Jason never gave them to his dad, to keep him in the blind. Rev. Hill believes the solution to our dropout rate his more parent and community support. He believes that house bill 19 is an important bill to pass for our children to improve, even if they are forced in attendance by law, eventually they will understand they need to graduate (Hill, February 2013).
