Community Interview
Mrs. A.Smith
Mrs. Allison Smith is my second community representative she is social worker at Bethune Middle School in DeKalb County. She has been a school social worker for nine years. She views the dropout rate derived from a lack of resources. Students begin to feel pressure from their fellow classmates, family, and friends at this point in their education. There are so many expectations to live up to which becomes discouraging to some students, instead of building them to succeed. Students leave middle school afraid because of myths they have heard, it is our responsibility to set them at ease with the transgression. Schools should have more programs to assist students who are having feelings they want to leave the school setting. For example, middle schools should have more counseling services, career services, and mentoring programs. Mrs. Smith believes everyone has similar viewpoints about the age requirement for school, in which house bill 19 would be a help, but knows that it will take years to see the bill actually go in effect. There are some teachers who do not agree with having students I their classroom disrupting the students who want to actually learn. This is a problem that cannot be fixed overnight; it can only improve with time and effort from all parties involved (Smith, March 2013).
