Personal Reflections
House bill 19 is an important bill that has ethical strengths and weaknesses; with this bill in place it is showing our students that we value them as well as their education regardless of their race, culture, ethnicity, religion, or social status. When it comes to education this would be a law that has no discrimination barriers. This bill would affect everyone the students keeping them in school to further their education upon graduating from high school. As parents, this bill is giving them the responsibility and task of making sure their children are in school from their fifth and seventeenth birthdays are they will be fined for not following law mandated policy. As a teacher, it gives them the opportunity to instill more information in students to help their grades and GP.A in case they want to go on to college after graduation. As a social worker, house bill 19 gives us the chance to show the students their self-worth and dignity. There are some many students who believe school is not worth their time or that their not smart enough to complete the task that her put forth in the classrooms. It is part of our job as social workers to show the students they can overcome the minor obstacles and setbacks, we must promote their well-being. Reassuring the students that without an education it is tough to succeed in today’s society. The key concept for us to show the student is self-determination assisting them in identifying that they have it and identifying their goals.
I believe that the age requirement for school should be from fifth to seventeenth birthday for students. During this session I have spoken to several individuals all of whom have their own opinion on the bill and the better good of the students. There are people that feel if the bill is set into place it will begin to disrupt the people who actually want to be in school. This is like giving up on our next generation and discriminating against the students who do not have support, family, role model, or the self-esteem to want to do better. If we continue to allow them to leave school at sixteen, the numbers will constantly increase and so will the unemployment and welfare rates. I value education and I know as a social worker I can show a student the importance of graduating as long as I am giving the time an opportunity. It is our jobs as parents, political leaders, teachers, and social workers to assure our children we are not going to give up on them, just because they have gave up on themselves. This assignment was particularly difficult when it came to trying to get in touch with individuals to do an interview, because they are so busy. It was informative and I learned about how policy making is important in my field as a social worker I must be aware of policy to better help my clients. If I do not now policy how can I advocate and be the voice they society can hear speak on my clients behalf.
